Synergistic Effect of a Course of Swimming Training in Hot and Cold Water Along with the Consumption of Cinnamon Supplement on Apoptotic Indices of The Cardiac Tissue in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Introduction: Recent findings have demonstrated that physical activity and the use of antioxidants can mitigate the consequences of diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of swimming training in hot and cold water in combination with cinnamon supplementation on the expression of apoptotic indices of heart tissue (Bax and Bcl-2) in diabetic rats.
Materials & Methods: The present study was experimental basic research with a post-test design along with a control group, which was conducted on 49 female mice of the Spraguedauli breed. The number of 7 mice as a control group and 42 healthy mice in groups 1) control, 2) training, training at 5°C, 3°C, selection and consumption of cinnamon, 4) selection and training in the swimming temperature of 5 °C and consumption of cinnamon, 5) heat the training exercise at the temperature of 36 °C and 6 °C. The training was done for 8 weeks in water with a temperature of 5 and 36 degrees Celsius. Aqueous extract of cinnamon is prescribed at a dose of 200 mg per meal of the animal's body weight. The expression of Bax and Bcl2 genes was measured using polymerase chain reaction.
Results: Cinnamon consumption, swimming exercise, and a combination of these two interventions had a significant effect on BAX and BCL2 genes in the heart tissue of diabetic rats. The mean expression of the BAX gene in the diabetic group + exercise in cold temperature (P=0.03; MD=-0.259), diabetic group + exercise in hot water (P=0.001, MD=-0.875), group Diabetic+exercise in cold temperature+cinnamon (P=0.001; MD=1.291), and diabetic group+exercise in hot temperature+cinnamon (P=0.001; MD=1.673) significantly decreased compared to diabetic rats in control group.
Conclusion: As evidenced by the obtained results, it seems that eight weeks of intense repetitive exercise could reduce the apoptosis in the left ventricle by decreasing the BAX gene expression and increasing the BCL-2 gene in the myocardium of diabetic rats and possibly improve diabetic cardiomyopathy.
