Evaluation of the nutritional value and use of whole foliage of Siris in comparison with alfalfa forage in feeding of fattening lambs

Introduction: Providing new resources for use in livestock diets will increase the production and supply of rations that, in addition to providing adequate nutrients for livestock, are also economically viable. Therefore, the use of native plants and food resources will bring us closer to this goal. The aim of this study was to determine the digestibility and fermentability of the whole foliage of Siris (Siris) and to evaluate its nutritional value in the diet of fattening lambs.
Materials & Methods: In the first experiment, the experimental treatments were including 1- alfalfa forage and 2- Siris alone. In second experiment the experimental treatments were diets of fattening lambs in which the Siris was replaced with alfalfa forage: 1- control diet (without Siris foliage), 2- the ration contained 15% Siris foliage (50% replacement of Siris foliage with alfalfa forage) 3- the ration contained 22.5% Siris foliage (75% replacement of Siris foliage with alfalfa forage). In the present experiment, the gas production method and two-stage digestion were used to determine the digestion and fermentation of the treatments with 7 replications.
Result: The percentage of crude protein (18.43 vs. 16.5), neutral detergent fiber (NDF, 55.59 vs. 50.90), metabolizable energy (ME, 3.70 vs. 2.79), percentage of dry matter (62.00 vs. 58.27), and neutral detergent fiber (47.03 vs. 37.80) digestibility, and gas production potential of Siris were higher than alfalfa forage. The partitioning factor (PF, 4.09 vs. 4.49 mg ml-1) and microbial biomass production efficiency (0.45 vs. 0.51) of alfalfa were significantly higher than Siris.  The potential and rate of gas production of the experimental diets containing the Siris were not affected by the replacement of Siris by the alfalfa forage (P>0.05). The percentage of dry matter (57.71 and 61.97 vs. 56.37) and NDF (44.71 and 38.39 vs. 35.72) digestibility in the diets containing Siris were higher than the control diet.
Conclusion: Therefore, considering that the nutritional value of the Siris foliage and the diets containing it were comparable to the alfalfa and the diet containing alfalfa and even were better in some cases, it can be recommended to use the Siris as part of the diet of fattening lambs.
